Snow Mold refers to a group of diseases that occur in cold weather and are favored by now cover.

Management

Prevent snow compaction and try gently raking to loosen any matted grass but in some cases the affected area may never recover.

Prevention

Maintain regular mowing until dormancy and avoid heavy applications of water-soluble nitrogen in late fall.

  • Gray Snow Mold: Gray patches & web-like Mycelium
  • Pink Snow Mold: White/pink patches & matted leaf blades

Causes

  • Snow cover before the ground has completely frozen
  • Wintertime moisture
  • Long grass and debris
